UKCA Toy Safety Testing

All of our toys here at 3D Joy are UKCA tested and certified.

UKCA (United Kingdom Conformity Assessed) EN 71 testing for toys evaluates specific safety standards. The first three parts assess physical/mechanical safety, flammability, and toxic chemical migration, respectively, to ensure children’s products are safe for the market in Great Britain.

EN 71 Part 1: Mechanical and Physical Properties

This test ensures toys do not have hazards like sharp edges, sharp points, or detachable small parts that could pose choking risks.

• How it works: Toys are subjected to a series of abuse tests—such as drop, torque, tension, and impact tests—to simulate rough play by children.
• For children under 3: Toys intended for this age group undergo stricter evaluation to completely eliminate sharp points and choking hazards.
• Additional criteria: It also assesses hazards regarding acoustics, cords, and projectile toys.

EN 71 Part 2: Flammability

This section assesses the burning behavior of toys and textiles to ensure they do not catch fire easily, giving a child enough time to drop the toy or escape if it ignites.

• How it works: Materials (such as plush toys, wigs, and dress-up costumes) are tested to measure their rate of flame spread.
• Prohibited materials: Highly flammable materials like cellulose nitrate are strictly forbidden in all toys.

EN 71 Part 3: Migration of Certain Elements

This test checks the toxicity of the toy by simulating what happens if a child sucks, chews, or swallows parts of the product.

• How it works: Toy materials (paint, plastic, wood finish, or fabric) are immersed in a solution that mimics stomach acid.
• Tested elements: The laboratory analyzes the acid to measure the migration of up to 19 restricted heavy metals (such as lead, mercury, cadmium, and arsenic).
• Limits: It limits the exact quantity of these elements that can be leached out, ensuring the levels remain safe for a child’s health.

We only use EN7 certified filaments for printing our toys or products that have a ‘play value’ i.e. the product must be regarded as a toy because it has play value for a child.

We either source EN7 certified filaments from our specialist suppliers or we send filaments we source from other suppliers for EN7 testing to a laboratory here in the United Kingdom.
